Annie Jael Kwan

Annie Jael Kwan is an independent curator and researcher. Her work explores borders, movement, the oceanic and coastal regions in relation to climate change and the anthropocenic, indigeneity and radical subjectivity and technology in contemporary art. Since 2012 her curatorial initiative, Something Human, has delivered exhibitions and live art programmes in the UK and internationally, including the 2017 M.A.P. project at the Diaspora Pavilion in Venice, and launching the landmark Southeast Asia Performance Collection hosted at the Live Art Development Agency in London. In 2018, her project ‘UnAuthorised Medium’ explored artistic practices with archives that raised alternative narratives in relation to Southeast Asia. She was selected for the International Curators Forum curatorial programme, Beyond the Frame (2016-2018) and for Outset/Arts Council England’s programme for emerging curators for which she curated the colloquium Curating Radical Futures that took place at Tate Modern. In 2019, she was awarded the Diverse Actions Leadership Bursary to develop new research in live art that saw the launch of PASAR (Post-Asian School of Alternative Rites.) She is a founding core member of the research network, Asia-Art-Activism, in residence at Raven Row till August 2019. She holds a BA Honours in Theatre Arts from Goldsmiths, and a MA (Distinction) in History of Art and/or Archaeology from SOAS, University of London. She teaches at Central St Martins and Sotheby’s’ Institute of Art.
